There’s a totally relaxed, Canary Islander kind of feel here that you don’t always pick up somewhere else.

We kicked things off at the Plaza de España, like, that’s the heart of the city. That is a cool open space that connects you to the waterfront. From there, we had a walk along the Rambla del General Franco. And that too, like, is a broad avenue full of shops and cafes. What really sticks out is the art, there’s quite a few sculptures just right out there on the streets. The guide pointed them out, so you knew there were pieces there to be enjoyed.

Too, we spent some time at the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África. People call it “La Recova.” I will tell you, that’s a must-see. That’s not simply, just, a market, it’s a buzz of local life. There, you get everything from fresh produce and local cheeses to seafood so fresh, it probably was swimming in the ocean that morning. The colors and aromas are something else; that really hits your senses!

Something else that can be arranged is the visit to the TEA – Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, should you wish. TEA actually, shows art exhibitions, there is even a library and shop there as well, for you to spend some of your leisure hours visiting the great masters.

Masca: The Hidden Village

After the capital, Masca could be next, and you need to get ready for a different beat. Masca truly, is a totally picturesque village high up in the Teno Mountains. The drive itself is, like, crazy, with hairpin turns. Honestly, not for someone that might be nervous on a mountain road. However, the views more or less, make it all worth it. I think it is very great.

Masca once actually, was really isolated, and so, has kept much of its genuine charm. The houses there appear to cling to the cliffs, the views look like they’re straight out of a painting. We had some time just walking around, clicking pictures and getting something of a handle on the really slower tempo of the place.

For anyone into hiking, there is also the Masca Gorge hike. Yet, I didn’t actually, do it on this specific trip since I had read it requires some level of fitness. Basically, it is about a three-hour hike down to the coast. So, too it’s a boat trip back which may be pretty refreshing after all that walking! Garachico: Reborn from the Ashes

The final place on the list was Garachico. I think, really, that town’s got a touching story. In the early 1700s, too, a volcano almost wiped it out. But that town sprang back up. Currently, there’s a real, super relaxed and welcoming vibe there.

A huge draw that the city can offer is the natural pools formed from the lava. Like, people actually, go swimming in them. We simply, instead, had a stroll along the waterfront, took in the Castillo de San Miguel (the old fortress), and just hung out at a cafe in the Plaza de la Libertad. People were sipping coffee, taking in a totally unhurried type of pace of life.

I also found, as well, that Garachico provides great photo opportunities.
