If you’re after something amazing, then perhaps Ksar Ghilane is for you. Ksar Ghilane is like this oasis right on the edge of the Sahara in Tunisia, so too it’s almost a gateway to a completely different planet. What I wanted was to see what this sunset dinner and starlit night gig in the desert was actually like, you know? So, here’s what happened and what I think, very candidly.

First Impressions: Reaching the Desert’s Edge

The drive there is kind of long, honestly. You are basically passing through rocky plains that seem to stretch out forever, that is until the landscape begins morphing into massive dunes of soft sand. Reaching the oasis is itself a bit surreal, a burst of palm trees surrounding a spring, very unexpected, really. Now, the accommodations close by – they range from tented camps which are pretty bare bones to proper hotels. I stayed in something in between; not super luxurious, very functional though, alright. The real question then was, would this trip beyond my lodgings into the Sahara actually live up to all that I was hoping for?

Setting Sun, Setting the Scene: Dinner Among the Dunes

So, you hop on a 4×4 (very exciting!), and you go bumping through the sand just as everything begins to glow. And there it is, like, set up between these crazy-looking dunes: tables, rugs, and lanterns. It gives a vibe that is somewhere between bohemian and Bedouin, in some respects, pretty enchanting. The meal… Well, alright, it wasn’t really gourmet, very satisfying however after spending time in the stark outdoors; lots of classic Tunisian things with bread, couscous, grilled stuff, you name it.

As the sun went lower, that sky turned into the most breathtaking painting, so it turned colors I’ve really only ever seen in photos. And eating while the desert air begins to cool? So cool! I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t borderline magical, or very, very close to it.

Stars Above, Silence Around: A Night to Remember?

As soon as the eating part wraps up, you want to locate your best viewing point because here comes the stargazing – arguably, that is the main deal! Away from like any lights, the Sahara does transform into a planetarium, pretty stunning really. The stars look like they’ve got their volume turned way, way up, if you can picture that! And with nobody around talking or doing anything? Really peaceful; really special, too it’s almost meditative, you know?

What I noticed is that they usually have local guys playing instruments, very quiet desert tunes which kind of enhances what you are seeing and feeling, so that works. Lying there staring up, all wrapped in blankets… Is that an out-of-this-world experience? Probably yes, or certainly close. But don’t kid yourself, you are still on Earth! That sand will probably get everywhere.

Things to Consider: Sand in Your… Everything

Okay, you need to be aware, this isn’t the Four Seasons. The desert is the desert, so, basically there are critters, there’s sand, and then the temperature does dip, rather drastically after sundown. Dress smart with layers – think sweaters, hats – that kind of stuff; the locals basically recommended this. Using wet wipes and hand sanitizer is a pro move since soap and water aren’t available in the middle of the Sahara, or anywhere close by. And yeah, you might be sitting on rugs or low cushions, that is unless you’re super quick and get a chair – not a huge issue, very, very manageable, right?

Now, for those bugs that appear after the food, bug spray is almost non-negotiable. Very small price to pay, so bring it! I’d read mixed reviews about things like bathroom situations; these turned out okay, still basic. Think “portable” and that everything is transported far out in the desert by the tour operators.

Is It Really Worth It? My Candid Take

Honestly? Yes, it really is, if, like, you go into this with eyes open and you know a bit about the real deal. That landscape? Unforgettable, even. Those stars? Well, you’d be hard pressed to imagine something quite so wondrous. That meal? Actually quite tasty considering that it happens miles away from anywhere with the resources of a fully operating professional kitchen. It is something amazing to experience that dinner as that darkness falls, or certainly was for me. Would I go again? Definitely! However, I’d go a little better prepared!
